General Hari Singh Nalwa was born at Gujranwala now in West Pakistan in A.D. 1791 in uppal Khatri family in the house of Sardar Gurdyal Singh & Dharam Kaur. Hari Singh came to know with the appellation of ‘NALWA’ which was derived from the warrior king Nal of ancient Indian known to his generosity. Sir Henry Griffin famous British dignitary called him “MURAT OF KHALSA”.

Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa, the Marshal of the Khalsa rendered glorious services towards extending the limits of the kingdom of Lahore from 1811 to 1837 up to the natural boundaries of the Punjab to the extent of sacrificing his life for the patriotic mission. The map of Punjab during the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh depicts that sealing of the North-West Frontier border by the great Sardar Nalwa’s unique act having international legacy. It was the first time after Anangpal in 800 years that the series of invasions from the North-West were checked, the border sealed and the tribes men ruled

Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa was an astute statesman, a dashing general and a most capable administrator. He undertook the arduous task of going on blood squeezing campaigns or administering people of newly acquired territories with an orthodox spirit and aspirations and took care of the whole affair with his companions brought up in the composite culture. He died in 1837 at Peshawar.

With deng chew shed & burning desire to bring to time the indispensable contribution of Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa for the cause of mother country. On the eve of his bicentenary birth celebrations in 1991 the foundation stone of Guru Nanak Khalsa College library was laid.
